![]() Whoever took these tracks "remastered" them into stereo, which caused some of the instruments to become very faint in the background, as the original leaked backing tracks were in mono and not the greatest quality. The tracks on this CD are the 1999 Japan Backing Tracks that have been available online within trading circles for quite some time now, and very easy to find online if you know where to look. I got my copy a while back and while I enjoy it, it would have been nice to know that it wasn't an official release from The Really Useful Group (who owns the rights to Phantom). ![]() If you are just a fan of the show then the original cast recording is still the benchmark. However if you are phan and have collected the various versions of the soundtrack you are probably buying this. If not for the extreme echo this would be an essential purchase. This would be a great karaoke disc or if someone was staging an amateur production. It's also possible this has been pulled from the internet and ripped to disc, there are a few quiet sections where it sounds less than "CD-quality". There a few parts where the instrumentation strays from the original, but only the most diehard of phans will notice. This CD-R is a complete re-recording However for the asking price-to this phanatic it's easily worth the purchase and a unique alternate listen. This is not the actual original studio recording with the vocal tracks muted. There is an overt abundance of echo/reverb added to the tracks, they sound very wet and distant. We will use 1986 London Cast as the 'original' in this review as its the one most associated with Phantom. ![]() On the whole the instrumentation is very close to the original version. It looked official in that respect, but the price and being a CD-R are the obvious telltale signs. The cover clearly has the current Broadway/West End logo being used. As a Phantom of the Opera obsessive I jumped on this, but was dubious as to what this really was. ![]()
